The Department of Commerce recently self-initiated an unfair trade practices case for imported aluminum sheet with a thickness of 6.33 mm or less but greater than 0.2 mm, in coils or cut-to-length, regardless of width. This common alloy aluminum includes the 3000 series used frequently by trailer manufacturers in enclosed cargo units, including horse and livestock trailers, among other types, as well as 1000 series and 5000 series used by some NATM members.
Trailer manufacturers rely on aluminum sheet, particularly in wider widths, which can be difficult to source domestically. The recent investigation by the Department of Commerce could significantly jeopardize our industry by imposing import tariff of 60% and above on certain foreign aluminum.
NATM has joined the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) in efforts to advocate for the needs of our industries, but support from members is critical. These tariffs could be put into place as early as February, and we are calling upon you and your company to take action now by sending a letter to your members of Congress to let them know how this tariff would negatively affect your industry.
