There are many factors that drive up healthcare cost. Advances in medicine and technology result in expensive new treatments and the aging of population and health issues result in higher utilization. Prescription drug cost is driving medical cost and specialty drugs are driving them both. With hundreds of new drugs coming to the market over the next few years, it will likely get worse before it gets better. Multi-million dollar claims increased 68% from 2013 to 2016 according to the 2017 Sun-Life Stop-Loss Research Report. Cancer treatments which frequently involve specialty drugs, generated the highest claims. These days, managing a health benefits program means managing change. Healthcare benefits must serve the evolving needs of employees and their families, support the organization’s short and long term objectives and adapt to the rapid-fire change occurring in the market and in healthcare policy.
