April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month: A Call to Action for All Drivers
As we enter April, the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) proudly joins forces with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and other traffic safety advocates to spotlight a crucial issue: distracted driving. Recognized as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, April serves as a vital reminder of the dangers associated with losing focus behind the wheel, an issue that intersects significantly with our mission to promote trailer safety.
The Startling Facts
Distracted driving is a pervasive problem, with the statistics* speaking volumes:
-
In 2024, distracted driving crashes claimed the lives of 3,208 people.
-
An estimated 315,167 individuals sustained injuries in traffic incidents involving distracted drivers that same year.
-
Distraction was a factor in 5% of fatal crashes, 13% of injury crashes, and 12% of all police-reported traffic crashes.
-
Alarmingly, 6% of drivers aged 15 to 20 involved in fatal crashes were distracted, marking this group as having the highest proportion of distracted drivers in fatal incidents.
-
Tragically, 639 nonoccupants, including pedestrians and cyclists, lost their lives in distraction-affected crashes.
Safety Tips for Drivers
Combating distracted driving requires a conscious effort from every driver. Here are essential tips to ensure your safety and that of others on the road:
-
If anticipating a message or needing to send one, safely pull over and park before using your device.
-
Assign your passenger as the “designated texter” to handle calls or messages.
-
Avoid social media scrolling or messaging while driving.
-
Utilize your phone’s “Do Not Disturb” feature or store it in an inaccessible spot like the trunk or glove box.
-
Set a positive example for family and friends by keeping your phone out of sight while driving.
-
Heed your passengers' advice if they remind you to put your phone away.
