How Agencies Can Strengthen Community Safety Through Trailer Safety Week

Keeping roads safe takes teamwork. Trailer Safety Week (TSW) gives DOTs and public safety officials a dedicated opportunity to connect with communities, educate trailer users, and promote safe towing practices that protect drivers and families alike.

What is Trailer Safety Week?

Trailer Safety Week, taking place June 7-13, 2026, is an annual, federally recognized, nation-wide awareness campaign aimed at increasing awareness of the importance of trailer safety, educating end-users about proper trailer maintenance and usage, and creating a stronger partnership between stakeholders of the industry including DOTS, law enforcement, public safety officials, trailer dealers, manufacturers, and end-users.

The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) launched TSW in 2018 after past National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Administrator Mark Rosekind challenged the Association to raise consumer awareness about safe towing after noticing a trend in accidents caused by improper use. More than 1 million new trailers are registered annually, with millions traversing the nation’s roadways every day. No matter how safely a trailer is built, it can still be used in incredibly unsafe ways, many times unintentionally.

With traffic fatalities rising at record levels, and the federal government looking for ways to implement its first-ever National Roadway Safety Strategy, Trailer Safety Week is a perfect example of how industry and government can come together to find commonsense solutions for the benefit of everyone traveling our nation’s roads.

Get Involved

By signing up as a TSW Ally, agencies gain access to the official Trailer Safety Communications Kit, designed to make participation in Trailer Safety Week simple, consistent, and impactful. This toolkit equips DOTs, law enforcement, and public safety officials with ready-to-use resources to help share critical trailer safety information with their communities.

The digital Communications Kit includes:

  • Customizable, pre-crafted social media posts
  • Downloadable Trailer Safety Week graphics
  • Sample blog content
  • Additional outreach materials that can be easily customized for local use

These resources help agencies amplify safety messaging across multiple platforms while maintaining a clear and unified voice around safe trailering practices. Becoming a TSW Ally demonstrates your agency’s visible commitment to roadway safety and public education.

Beyond the Communications Kit, Trailer Safety Week also creates meaningful opportunities for local collaboration. With NATM Members located across the country (and around the world), agencies can connect with trailer manufacturers, dealerships, and parts suppliers in their own communities. These industry partners bring valuable hands-on expertise and can play an important role in safety demonstrations, educational events, inspections, and outreach efforts.

Strong local partnerships help translate awareness into action, giving the public practical knowledge about safe towing, proper maintenance, and compliance.

A single unsafe trailer on the road represents a risk to motorists and families. Trailer Safety Week is designed to help reduce that risk by empowering DOTs and public safety officials to lead the conversation in their communities. Through education, outreach, and collaboration, agencies can play a direct role in building safer roadways for everyone.
